Ski Climb Sillouette.jpg

Your safety in the backcountry

Mt Potts and the surrounding terrain is a backcountry ski area. Backcountry terrain is not controlled for avalanche hazards.  There is no Ski Patrol or other safety net. Rescue can take some time so be prepared. The backcountry and mountains can be a dangerous place regardless of your skills and experience.  Weather, snow conditions and steep terrain can combine to make the mountains a treacherous place (or an absolute joy).  Please ensure you, or someone in your party, have the required snow safety skills and experience to assess avalanche conditions.  If no one in your party has the necessary skills and experience, then find someone who has or hire a guide to go with you.  Every member of your party must carry an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe and know how to use them. We also strongly encourage you to have at least 2 Personal Locator Beacons (or other satellite comms) per party.  While the location of Erewhon Hut is ‘low risk’, it is located in complex avalanche terrain (based on the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale). Getting to and from the hut can be high risk depending on snow conditions. If you are not sure - talk to a guide or don’t go.

Please refer to the Canterbury Backcountry Avalanche Report www.avalanche.net.nz for up to date information.

Some of the key HAZARDS include:

Mountain Terrain - mountainous areas with steep slopes in their natural state have many obstacles and extreme hazards, may not have been climbed or skied before, are not patrolled or regularly examined, and communication may be difficult and rescue and medical treatment may not be available. Terrain includes exposure to multiple, overlapping avalanche paths or large expanses of steep, open terrain; multiple avalanche starting zones and terrain traps below; and minimal options to reduce exposure. Understand the risks - make sure you understand the risks inherent in moving in mountain terrain. If you are not experienced take a mountain guide with you.  Wear a helmet.  Ski in control. Carry a Personal Locator Beacon or other satellite communication.

Avalanches - may frequently occur in mountainous terrain and may be caused by natural forces including steepness of the slopes, snow depth, instability of the snow pack, changing weather conditions or by other climbers or skiers, or helicopter.  ‘Low risk’ does not mean ‘no risk’.  Understand the risks - even the most experienced backcountry skier can misjudge conditions and trigger an avalanche.  Assess the avalanche danger and make conservative decisions.  If in doubt, don’t go!

Weather - weather conditions may be extreme and change rapidly without warning including high/extreme winds, snow, rain and cold temperatures.  Understand the riskscarry extra gear to safeguard against unexpected changes in the weather.  Check the weather forecast.

Access

Map Reference: Latitude -43.49129 Longitude 170.91163 Altitude 1741m.

By car: Is about 1.5 hrs from Methven or 2.5 hrs drive from Christchurch Airport to the carpark at the bottom of the public access easement on Hakatere Potts Road, Ashburton Lakes – 1.7km past the Mt Sunday car park. Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/beVH22XcdpAAbG876

Walk/skin/ebike: If you park your car just off the Hakatere Potts Road, at the bottom of the public access easement (sign posted), you can walk, skin or ebike in depending on conditions, following the original access track.  Access is initially via a public access easement over private land.  The track is not suitable for vehicles – there are locked gates, wash outs and slips along the track. Motorised vehicles are not permitted in any event so please don’t even try. If you are walking or skinning in, you probably want to give yourself 3.5 - 5 hours to get to the hut from the car park depending on conditions and how much gear you are carrying – make your own assessment. If you are ebiking, please stick to the track – its private land and a conservation area.  Ebikes are not permitted off the track. Check the Avalanche Advisory and make your own judgment on conditions

Heli access: Heli access is available by arrangement through Station Air - https://www.mesopotamia.co.nz/station-air/. If you decide to heli in we suggest you leave a vehicle at the bottom of the public access easement to return to and walk/ski out.

A few extra things you need to know:

  • Bring a sleeping bag liner or bottom sheet if you are intending on sleeping on the mattress with your sleeping bag undone - this helps keep our mattresses clean for other parties.

  • All kitchen equipment and gas cookers are provided (including gas).  Take your own tea towel.

  • Pack it in, pack it out - all food, rubbish and equipment are to be taken with you i.e. everything you bring in has to go out with you please.  Please don't leave food behind for the next party.

  • Long drop toilet.

  • Toilet paper is not supplied, please take your own.

  • There are lights and USB/USB-C chargers in the hut subject to solar electricity.  Lightning may impact solar components and batteries may be flat - take your own power bank for critical comms.

  • Firewood for the log burner is provided.

  • Smoke alarms, Carbon Monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers are installed in the hut.

  • There is stream located close to the hut for water in the summer and the shoulder seasons, however may not be flowing in the winter.  The pipe outlet is located by the bottom pole and water hole by the top pole (if the pipe is frozen).
